Manual Lymphatic Drainage and Brazilian Lymphatic Drainage: Guide and Comparison
Wellness on Whyte offers several lymphatic drainage services to meet your needs: Brazilian Lymphatic Drainage and Manual Lymphatic Drainage. Both of these services address the lymphatic system, promote detoxification, and reduce swelling, but they have different techniques and serve different purposes. Read on to learn about the key differences and choose the service that best fits your needs.

First of all, what is the lymphatic system?
The lymphatic system is made up of organs, vessels, and tissues that all work together to maintain normal fluid levels in the body. This system collects extra fluid from tissues and returns that fluid to the body’s bloodstream. The lymphatic system also removes waste products, toxins, infection, and abnormal cells from the body, forming a vital part of your immune system. Additionally, the lymphatic system is responsible for absorbing nutrients like vitamins and fats that will be redistributed into the bloodstream.

What is Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)?
MLD is a medical-grade, gentle massage technique that was developed by Dr. Emil Vodder and his wife Estrid Vodder in the 1930s. It differs from traditional massages by focusing on the lymphatic system and the lymph vessels.
Our MLD practitioners stimulate the lymphatic system with slow, rhythmic movements, using very gentle pressure to move excess fluid out of the tissues and back into the circulatory system. The practice focuses especially on lymph nodes, to improve their activity. No oils are used during this practice.
MLD is commonly used to treat lymphedema, chronic inflammation, fibromyalgia, and post-surgical swelling (with a doctor’s approval).
What is Brazilian Lymphatic Drainage (BLD)?
BLD is also a type of specialized massage where practitioners use gentle movements to stimulate the lymphatic system and encourage lymphatic fluid to drain. It blends traditional lymphatic drainage practices with sculpting and contouring techniques designed to enhance body definition. BLD still boosts the immune system and detoxifies the body, but there is also an aesthetic component that focuses on contouring the body, defining natural curves, and reducing water retention.
Aesthetic benefits of a BLD massage:
- Can help smooth cellulite, especially as the massage improves circulation and helps even out tissues
- Creates a less bloated appearance, especially around the abdomen
- Creates a more toned and defined look along the waist, hips, and limbs
- Reduces inflammation overall
A BLD massage uses more pressure and is a faster-paced massage, compared to MLD, and it is designed to move a greater amount of fluid more quickly.

Benefits of Lymphatic Drainage Massages
Both Manual Lymphatic Drainage and Brazilian Lymphatic Drainage are highly beneficial practices that promote overall health and wellbeing. They will make you feel better on the inside, and you will also see natural aesthetic improvement. A major benefit is the reduction of inflammation and fluid retention, but you will also notice a sense of harmony and energy renewal in your body as the massage brings your body back into balance.
