The Other Side of Self-Care

The Other Side of Self-Care
March 31, 2018 WoW admin

If you google “self-care” you’ll surely get a gaggle of results recommending activities like planning a weekend getaway or soaking in a bubble bath.

While these could be ideal ways to spend your self-care time, they also represent only one side of what self-care encompasses. If we’re looking though a holistic lens, we must also recognize a difficult and uncomfortable side as well. A side that requires us to stand up for our well-being by setting boundaries or responding to a relationship or situation in a way that is authentic to who we are (possibly for the first time).

For example, maybe you’re a “yes” person — someone who is agreeable and says yes before checking in with yourself to consider the answer. A small step to self-care would be to create a habit of responding with something like, “let me think about it and get back to you” or “let me check my schedule first.” This way you’re not saying “no” outright. You’re allowing yourself the space to check-in with yourself and ask if this is in your best interest and aligns with your goals and values. Remember that time is our most limited resource and, in the moment, we’re likely to believe we can take on a LOT. Show yourself some love and consideration in this way. Value your time and energy appropriately.

The next time you set aside time for self-care, maybe it’s just a check-in to see if you’re honouring yourself with your decisions and the way you spend your time. Do you have any habits or relationships that need a little adjusting? You can even have these conversations with yourself in a luxurious bubble bath!
