Social Media & Self Worth: I Am Enough

Social Media & Self Worth: I Am Enough
April 1, 2019 WoW admin

Does social media ever make you feel inadequate?

Is it easy for you to compare your life to those you see online?

How can we be reminded of our own enoughness?

Like many people I have a love-hate relationship with social media. What I love about social media, especially Instagram, is the platform for creativity, individuality, and connection with likeminded people. The difficult part for me isn’t the fact that I can be caught mindlessly scrolling and watching stories for hours, even though I’m not proud of that. The real difficult part is remembering not to hit the comparison button after seeing a post that makes me see myself as less than in comparison.

Social media is definitely enamouring. Especially when the majority of the content highlights the best moments in peoples lives.

Here is what I’ve found the antidote to hitting the comparison button to be:

It is to remind ourselves; what is meaningful to us about our lives, what we love, and our purpose. We can then refocus our attention onto our own goals and fulfillment in life.  As a result, not feeling inadequate when we see the lives of others because we’re committed to what’s true and real for each one of us.

The language changes from “why don’t I have that” to “wow, I’m proud of what I have”.

Realizing our innate self worth doesn’t come naturally to a lot of us. Especially with such a tempting online world that feeds into our insecurities. However, when you live your life authentically for you and really feel the richness of what you love, and all that you already have.

Everything else is just a distraction.
